Environmental Justice and the Green Economy: A Vision Statement and Case Studies for Just and Sustainable Solutions

Climate Justice (PDF): An article on climate justice published in the November 2009 edition of Environmental Justice Magazine. The article was co-authored by WE ACT Executive Director Peggy Shepard, and Deputy Director Cecil Corbin-Mark.

Northern Manhattan and the Congestion Pricing Plan – A Comprehensive Look at the Citywide Plan from a Community Perspective (PDF): Produced in collaboration with the Urban Design Lab and the Center for Sustainable Urban Development at the Earth Institute at Columbia University (with funding from the Ford Foundation and New York Community Trust), this report presents WE ACT's findings on the issue of congestion pricing and its effects on Northern Manhattan, and makes recommendations that we expect can ensure that congestion pricing is a benefit and not a burden to Northern Manhattan communities. A summary of the report is available here.

Genes and Justice – A Community Symposium on Health, Race and Rights (Resource Guide): Our fall 2007 Genes and Justice symposium initiated a series of conversations for communities of color to assess the implications of the growing role that genetic information plays in our society. Co-published with the Genetics Equity Network, this resource guide is a rich primer authored by symposium participants and others. Topics include Genetics 101, health and race, law and regulation, criminal justice, genetic ethics and policy.  

Green Renaissance Guide to Healthy, Sustainable Urban Development – A View from Harlem (PDF): In this report, WE ACT for Environmental Justice and Environmental Defense offer guidance on building true partnerships between communities and developers so that urban redevelopment is healthy, sustainable and community driven. The report uses New York City and Harlem’s 125th Street as a lens through which to look at sustainable development challenges and solutions.  

Race, Poverty and the Environment – A Journal for Social and Environmental Justice:  Published twice annually by the Urban Habitat Program in California, this special issue, co-published and co-edited by WE ACT, focuses on the use of science and research to advance environmental justice.  

Environmental Health Perspectives: This NIEHS Environmental Health Perspectives supplemental issue on Environmental Justice and Community-Based Research was co-edited in April 2002 by WE ACT Executive Director Peggy Shepard and then WE ACT Environmental Health Director Swati Prakash. Articles include, “Advancing Environmental Justice Through Community-Based Participatory Research,” and “Overlooked and Underserved in Harlem.”  An update on the NIEHS-WE ACT partnership is available here.

The Time Has Come – The Capital Campaign for the WE ACT Environmental Justice Center of New York (PDF): This case statement discusses and illustrates the plans for WE ACT’s new home – a historic brownstone in West Harlem’s Hamilton Heights that will be reborn as the first green office building in Harlem.  

Human Genetics, Environment, and Communities of Color: Ethical and Social Implications: WE ACT’s two-volume conference proceedings in English and Spanish for its 2002 conference of the same title, with substantial information on environmental justice, genetics, environmental health and genetics, we resources, a bibliography on the subject and recommendations from community-based environmental justice groups. Harlem on the River – Making a Community Vision Real  (PDF): A case study of WE ACT and Community Board 9’s efforts to rally community residents to document and achieve their vision for the Harlem Waterfront, and the success of that initiative.
