Advancing Climate Justice Initiative

In order to infuse an environmental justice perspective into the national dialogue on climate change, in 2008 WE ACT developed the Advancing Climate Justice initiative, which is designed to strengthen the capacity of communities of color and low income in New York City and the New York region to engage in said dialogue. The initiative is currently working to implement the following activities in order to accomplish its goal:

  • Convene environmental justice advocates working locally, regionally and nationally around issues of climate change at a 2-day conference on January 29-30, 2009
  • Expand research findings that specifically examine the environmental, public health and economic impacts of climate change on Northern Manhattan
  • Educate Northern Manhattan community stakeholders and people from other communities of color and low income in New York City on the different strategies for dealing with the environmental, public health and economic impacts of climate change on environmental justice communities
  • Expand the capacity of New York region stakeholders and others to engage scientists and economists in dialogues on the environmental, public health and economic impacts of climate change on communities of color and low income
